University Vision Centre Discusses Monitoring Your Child's Vision

Vision is very important to childhood learning and development. The brain is beginning to interpret what it sees so that it can define the outside world. Routine vision examinations should be an integral part of pediatric medical care. Medical professionals have agreed on the following timelines:

  • NewbornsAt this point in time, the baby is not tracking, so visual acuity cannot be tested. However, a pediatrician can check the normal newborn for general eye health. If the infant is a premature or high risk, an optometrist or ophthalmologist should be consulted.
  • Six months of age. Fixating and tracking can be tested.
  • Three years of age. It is at this point that the child can communicate and visual acuity can be tested.
  • Five or six years of age.  A thorough check-up as they begin school could catch many vision issues before they become problems.
  • Every two years afterward if no correction is required.
  • Every year for those who need glasses or contact lenses.

Not-So-Routine Exams

Here are some other times you should seek out a vision professional:

  • Eye injuries
  • Watery eyes
  • Dry eyes
  • Pink eyes
  • Itching
  • Blurry vision
  • Squinting
  • Light sensitivity

At-Home Vision Care

Here are some at-home recommendations to ensure good vision:

  • Screen limits. If your child is watching a lot of television, sitting for long periods in front of a computer screen, or playing a lot of video games, you can put limits on his screen time.
  • NutritionProvide a healthy diet in the form of fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables.
  • Good hygiene. Hand washing can eradicate germs before they reach the eyes.
  • Adequate rest. There will be a decreased incidence of eye strain, dry eye, and blurred vision if the eyes have had sufficient rest.
